Description

Arq 7 is backup software for Mac and Windows that uses your own cloud storage instead of a backup company’s servers. You buy the app once for each computer, point it at storage you already pay for, and it keeps encrypted, versioned copies of your files in the background.

Back up to storage you already own

Arq connects to your own accounts on Amazon S3, Amazon Glacier, Google Cloud Storage, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Backblaze B2 and Wasabi. It also backs up to SFTP servers, NAS devices and external drives. You can run more than one destination at the same time, so a local copy and an offsite copy stay in step.

Encryption and ransomware protection

Files are encrypted on your computer before anything leaves it, with a password only you hold, and transfers run over SSL/TLS. Arq keeps point-in-time versions of every backup, so a single file or an entire machine can be rolled back to how it looked before ransomware hit or before someone overwrote the wrong thing. The backup format is open and documented, which means your data stays readable without being tied to one supplier.

What gets backed up

• Everything on the machine, or only the folders you choose, with your own exclusion rules
• Files of any size and any type, video included
• External drives and network shares
• Backups of external drives are kept even when the drive has not been plugged in for a while
• Old backup records stay until you decide to remove them

Scheduling and bandwidth

Run backups hourly or daily. Arq can hold off while the laptop is on battery or on a Wi-Fi network you have flagged, and you can cap the bandwidth it uses so it does not choke the office line. Block-level incremental backup, deduplication and compression cut down how much data gets sent and stored, which matters when you pay per gigabyte.

Restoring

Restore straight from the app, without downloading zip archives first. Pull back a single file, an earlier version of it, or the whole backup onto a different computer.

System requirements

Windows 8 or later, or Windows Server 2012 or later, with .NET 4.7.2 or later. Also available for macOS, where Arq uses APFS snapshots for clean point-in-time copies.
